Salix purpurea 'Nancy Saunders' x 5 cuttings
Often considered one of the most elegant pussy willows, Nancy Saunders has slender, graceful stems that are ideal for flower arranging. In spring, it produces delicate, petite silver catkins. Pictured here next to the anemones for scale.
As the season progresses, the stems take on rich red tones, while the grey-blue foliage develops a resemblance to eucalyptus leaves, though on a much finer scale. A wonderfully versatile and characterful addition to both the garden and the vase.
Cuttings are easy to grow and can be planted directly into the ground, keeping them well watered through spring and summer. Alternatively, insert them into a pot of compost to root, or our preferred method is to place them in water until roots develop, then pot on or plant out.
Supplied as a bundle of 5 x freshly cut cuttings (taken from two year old whips).
Although fast-growing , this willow remains a much more manageable size and works well in the garden, performing more as a shrub than a tree. Pollarding or coppicing each spring will help maintain a manageable size and encourage the production of fresh, decorative stems.
